Why Sobremesa?

Sobremesa is the leisurely time after we have finished eating, before we get up from the table. Time spent in conversation, digesting, relaxing, enjoying. Certainly not rushing.

On Sharing the Table

Sitting down to share a meal is an act of bonding and trust, in which we show ourselves to others as we are. At Sobremesa we believe that the shared time and space of the table can create stories and memories that last far beyond that singular moment.

Every time we share the table with others, it’s an opportunity to translate our own cultural backgrounds, and experience new ones.

The Japanese concept ichi go, ichi e (one chance, one encounter) reminds us that every time we sit down to the table with someone, that occasion will never repeat itself, and its space must be held as special.

We never cease to be fascinated by the magic of sobremesa: an act as bodily and sensorial as eating, something we do every day from birth to death, combined with the special experience that comes from gathering with others; friends, family, or complete strangers.

We Accommodate your Dietary Needs

Food is a huge part of travel. If you want to eat the same way you do at home, you might as well stay home. Nevertheless, we understand that eating out all the time can create havoc on the system. The excess fat, salt, and sugar even the best of restaurants use can leave us craving a clean meal.

Moreover, if you have dietary restrictions, not all places on the road are prepared to accommodate them, which can leave you eating the same things over and over again. At Sobremesa our staff includes a certified nutrition consultant, trained in all health conditions with food-related issues, who can design and adapt menus and recipes. We want you to enjoy the local food, and know that it can be done, even on the most limited diet.

Sobremesa takes pride in sourcing only the best ingredients, from small, local purveyors with organic practices. Camila is a sourcing geek, who believes that quality ingredients are the most important step towards any good meal. We avoid processed, refined foods and know just how to make that clean food your body is claiming.

A Place to Breathe

Barcelona is a lively city, which offers countless options and opportunities, as well as lots of stimuli. Sometimes they feel like too much. Even the most avid urbanite traveler sometimes needs to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in order to process what can feel like an overload of new information.

Our beautiful kitchen space is located in the hills on the outskirts of the city. A mere 20-minute train ride from the city center, it feels like another world, where green is all around, street noise disappears, and the air feels much cleaner as soon as you step off the train.

Often, after a class and meal, our clients say to us: “Wow, I didn’t even know I needed that break.” We understand! We love our neighborhood, and are happy to pick you up and walk you back to the station (only 10 minutes from our space).
